The Star Mazda Championship is a North American open-wheel sprint series that has run since 1991, competing on road courses, street courses, and ovals. The field sits at the professional level; most drivers are ungraded amateurs, but a core of Gold and Silver-graded professionals sits alongside them, and multiple drivers, among them Gustavo Menezes and Jack Hawksworth, have climbed into the top tier of sportscar racing. The series functions as a step between lower amateur competitions and professional championships, drawing drivers from the SKUSA SuperNationals and Formula Renault Eurocup, and feeding them toward IMSA WeatherTech, Indy NXT and Pro Mazda Championship. The field is considerably weaker than either of its primary destinations among the top-tier series, but comparable in strength to Indy NXT and stronger than the feeder circuits below.
