The Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin is a sprint racing series run by Mazda MX-5 Cup cars. The series fields a competitive amateur grid anchored by established professionals including Earl Bamber and Sebastien Bourdais alongside rising drivers. The field is stronger than the club and regional championships from which most entrants arrive, such as NASA and SCCA Regionals, but comparable in calibre to the SKUSA SuperNationals and weaker than IMSA Pilot Challenge, the professional sportscar series where many of its drivers go next. The series functions as a stepping stone, drawing drivers from grassroots competition and feeding successful competitors into higher professional ranks.
